*Currently I’m offering limited free ‘tickets’ in exchange for a short written testimonial (30-50 words), or photography (with a DSLR/mirrorless camera). If you’re interested, please shoot me an email.

Presence. Play. Insight.

Circling is a practice of relational mindfulness. It’s a contained space where we can experiment with far deeper “listening” to our experience than we might be used to in connection, and to see what that offers us.

We begin learning the practice using sentence stems like “I’m noticing”, “I imagine”, shifting our attention to what’s ‘inarguably true’ in present moment awareness.
However, it is as much about attuning to the richness of our own experience, as it is about verbally sharing about it, and connecting from our embodied aliveness (rather than observational distance).

Playing with the “mode” of circling can effortlessly light an enchanted fire & confidence in us, engender depths of unforced curiosity, empathy, and compassion towards others, as well as help unfold & integrate different parts of us into “fuller” versions of ourselves.

I believe circling helps us to live more gracious, bold, and magical social lives.

Benefits of Practicing

From outcomes as brochure-friendly as:

  • Skilfulness in non-violent communication & conflict-management.
  • Being with & unlocking the inner wisdom of difficult feelings (e.g. anger, sadness, discomfort, shyness).
  • Increased self-confidence & self-esteem.
  • Mastering compassionate boundary-setting.
  • Fostering deep connectivity, attunement, & care between people.
  • Integrating consent.

But also to the slightly more esoteric…

  • Deep self-discovery, discovering the other, seeing & being seen, sans egotism.
  • Opening to more of your experience.
  • Spontaneous, effortless creativity.
  • Moments of magic, vividness, psychoactive/non-ordinary states of consciousness…
    • Non-duality. Wholeness: Buddhas Playing. A sense of the mythic and mystical. Sacredness.
  • Meeting our shadows, touching vulnerability, getting eye-to-beautiful-eye with sublime innocence.
  • Increasing sense of embodied aliveness & energisation.

IF THIS SOUNDS SCARY Please read this before quitting this page…

I imagine (and have heard from others) that this list sounds kinda daunting! The mind reads the above words and the thought: “VULNERABILITY!!” screams out at us. We want to run. To that I want to say that in this space you are always fully in control of the vulnerability dial and I encourage people to trust their instincts with the depth of connection and openness. There isn’t a bias towards total openness & vulnerability. The pace that feels right is the exact perfect pace to be at, with no expectation of “eventually” going in a certain direction. We practice circling by beholding experience (ours & others) without trying to fix, change, coach, nor therapise. Trust!

Also, Circling is NOT: sitting around in a circle & telling each other our secrets (impression borrowed from a friend of mine…). Nor gathering, gritting our teeth, then nosediving into baring our souls & soft underbellies. Speaking from personal experience, seeing through the assumption (like a knife at the throat) that you will have to eventually “get naked” and tolerate it in order to “get better” might be part of “integrating consent”, leading to greater cognitive safety—as much important for life “out there” as in circling.

Instead of scary pictures, I love to frame circling as an experiment of “trying on” this weird way of connecting. I hold the pillars of circling as consent, self-leadership, and surrender.

Circling 101

The 5 principles:

  • Commitment to Connection
  • Owning Your Experience
  • Staying With the Level of Sensation
  • Trusting Experience
  • Being With the Other in Their World

“Self-Leadership”:

  • Self-leadership means deeply owning your experience, trusting what is arising, and staying connected at an embodied level. It means not tolerating anything. It means seeing opportunities for responsibility in every situation and finding more ways to take it. Another way to say this is to love yourself as much as you are loving others.
Not tolerating means not going along with what is happening simply because of social or group norms, or your own discomfort, challenging the leadership or power of others. It means realising the responsibility you can take for your life and experience in every moment. It means stepping off the wheel of judgement and resentment into empowered action. (Transformational Connection, SAS Curriculum)
